Sign-forming process

A dynamic process in which something functions for someone, in a certain respect, as a sign of something else.

Explanation

Meaning is not pre-existing in the sign-bearer. It arises in a relationship between the sign, the referent, and the interpretive process.

Example

A dark cloud is understood as an indication of impending rain.

Counterexample

An unnoticed spot may not function as a sign at all in a given situation.

Distinction

Distinguish from the static sign-bearer, which is only a moment in the process.

Effect on thought and perception

Shifts meaning from things to relationships and ongoing interpretation.

Resonance

Every interpretation can itself become a sign for a further interpretation.
